Sean Yardley

3rd year D.Phil Student

Sean is looking into the oxidation and hydration of Zirconium alloys used to clad fuel in nuclear reactors. If the level of hydrides are left to build up, they can interact with residual stresses in the metal and cause cracking, so this is an area with quite a lot of active research going on at the moment. Mostly he will be using TEM to characterise samples taken from different studies and try to throw light on the mechanisms of hydrogen ingress through the oxide layer and into the metal itself.
